Roger's Wine Pick of the Month
by Roger Ouellette
From: Cuisine in Motion Newsletter - October 2007

October 2007

"The wine I have chosen this month to accompany the Turkey is:

Calamus, Unoaked Chardonnay, 2006
Niagara Peninsula, VQA

This Chardonnay is a beautiful example of a fresh unoaked Chardonnay. Its crisp quality is a perfect foil for the richness of the Turkey. Also, it's tropical fruit nose plays well with the cranberry in this dish.

I had the great pleasure to visit Calamus Winery in September and was very impressed with the quality of all their wines. The winery is owned and operated by Derek Saunders and his wife Pat Latin. It became obvious to me that this winery is a labour of love for the two of them as Derek poured out some wines for me to taste and explained the nuances of them as one would boast about their child.

I recommend anyone to include this winery in their visit to Niagara. You will not be disappointed with the wines you taste and can purchase wines that are not available at the LCBO. At this time of year you can visit them on Saturday & Sunday: 11:00 am - 5:00 pm. During summer season they are open to visitors everyday. ..."

Wine Reviews
2006 Unoaked Chardonnay VQA - Niagara Peninsula $14.00
by Rod Phillips, Wine Current

October 2007

"This is a very successful Chardonnay that's characterized by pure fruit flavours and a great fruit-acid balance. Look for well-defined flavours of apple, pear and peach when you first open the bottle, and expect a delicate muskiness to emerge after about an hour to add complexity. The texture is smooth, the weight is medium, and this makes an excellent partner to roast chicken or grilled white fish." 4 Stars

WINE SAVVY Wine Ratings for October 2007
by Wine Savvy Consultants

October 2007

Calamus Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, Niagara ($22.95) - Rating: 88
"Let this wine breath for a half hour before serving. When open, it will showcase plum, minty/cedar, incense, violets and black licorice. The palate is somewhat "sweet" with black fruit resonating through the finish. Drink over the next five years. (ES)"

Calamus Red 2006, Niagara ($15) - Rating: 85
"This is the second vintage of this bottling, one that is softer than its predecessor. Cassis, black raspberry, herbs, roasted nuts and cherry are to be found in the light to mid weight wine. (ES)"
