Monday, March 5, 2007

Only six months out of the gate and Calamus Estate Winery has garnered impressive reviews for its 2005 Meritage.

Michael Lowe - Pulse - Wine Pick of The Week - "A fine example of Cool Climate viticulture"

Michael Vaughn - National Post - "of the red wines tasted (pre-Cuvee tasting), Calamus seemed to provide good value"

Gordon Stimmell - Toronto Star - 90 Rtg - "a substantial red"

Michael Pinkus - Ontario Wine Review - "could very well be the coming of age wine for Calamus...a balls-to-the-falls red" (winery is located at Ball's Fall's)

Lynn Ogryzlo - Niagara This Week - "super tannins and a long finish, lay this one down"

The Meritage is 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cab Franc and 6% Merlot with a year in French and American Oak. It retails at $28 and is available only through the winery.

On another front, the number of Ontario restaurants offering Calamus wines has continued to rise with the total now near 30. The Epic at the Royal York Hotel, the White Oaks Spa and the Pillar and Post in Niagara-on-the -Lake are the latest establishments to add Calamus to their wine lists.
